These beautiful baskets were handwoven in Rwanda by women whose skill and artistry have been passed down through generations. I purchased them directly from my friend Joy, who employs women in her community, giving them the opportunity to earn an income while weaving from their homes and caring for their children. Each basket is made from raffia and sweet grasses grown in Rwanda.
Many of these women survived the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. In the years that followed, basket weaving became more than a traditional craft. It provided income for their families while helping women reconnect, rebuild trust, and heal communities. Over time, these beautifully woven pieces became known around the world as “peace baskets,” symbols of Rwanda’s remarkable journey toward healing and hope.
